The January transfer window has seen a fierce competition between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United for the signature of Conor Gallagher. The 25‑year‑old midfielder is reportedly on his way out of Atletico Madrid to return to the English Premier League in order to revive his career.
According to sources, Tottenham have officially made contact with Gallagher’s camp. The Spurs view this as a good opportunity to strengthen their midfield, but they are facing obstaclVes from the Spanish club. While Tottenham are seeking a loan deal with wage contributions, Atletico Madrid have taken a very firm stance.
Tottenham want to compete with Manchester United for Gallagher’s signature.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his personal YouTube channel that Atletico are insisting on a permanent sale of Gallagher for around €30 million (about £26.2 million). “Atletico Madrid are adamant they want a full transfer. They do not want to let the player leave on loan,” Romano said.
This represents a great opportunity for Manchester United. Despite recently parting ways with manager Ruben Amorim, United’s recruitment plan is still being maintained by technical director Jason Wilcox. Man Utd are in need of a midfielder with plenty of energy and experience to partner Kobbie Mainoo, and Gallagher’s attractive price tag is within their financial reach. Romano also revealed that Man Utd have remained in contact with people close to Gallagher since last summer.
Gallagher himself is keen to play more regularly and impress England manager Thomas Tuchel. A return to the familiar environment of the Premier League is seen as the right move at this time. With both Tottenham and renewed interest from Man United, the future of the former Chelsea player is expected to be decided in the coming days at an appealing price.
