The 44-year-old former midfielder takes over the team in a chaotic situation following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, with the ultimate task of bringing the Red Devils back to the prestigious Champions League.
Manchester United have high expectations for Michael Carrick.
With elimination from all cup competitions, United’s only remaining goal this season is to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League. Currently sitting 7th in the table, the gap to 4th-placed Liverpool is just 3 points, giving Carrick and his side a significant opportunity.
Speaking on his first day in charge, Carrick expressed confidence in the quality of the current squad:
“I know what it takes to succeed here. My focus now is to help the players meet the standards this club expects. I’ve worked with many of them and have watched the team closely. I have complete belief in their talent and dedication.”
The challenge for Carrick begins immediately. His first match back in charge will be the fiery Manchester derby against Man City at Old Trafford on Saturday, followed by a trip to league leaders Arsenal the next weekend.
However, United’s board believes that with Carrick’s experience and deep internal understanding, he can revive the team’s spirit and achieve the objective of salvaging a disappointing season. Previously, he had an impressive 3-game unbeaten run when he served as caretaker manager in November 2021.
