Manchester United have officially begun planning for a future without Casemiro. By declining to trigger a one-year contract extension, the Brazilian star will leave Old Trafford as a free agent in the summer of 2026, concluding his four-year spell with the club.

According to reports from The Sun, the Red Devils’ hierarchy has drawn up a shortlist of four Premier League-based targets to succeed the midfield anchor, with the top priority being a genuine defensive midfielder (No. 6).
The Shortlist: A Focus on Young British Talent
Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest): The versatile 23-year-old Scottish midfielder, prized for his technical ability, combativeness, and vision, is under close observation.
Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace): The 22-year-old English gem, renowned for his exquisite passing range and exceptional game-reading from a deep-lying role.
Alex Scott (AFC Bournemouth): Former Bristol City prodigy, 22, dubbed the “Guernsey Grealish.” He is a creative box-to-box midfielder with strong playmaking abilities.
Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion): A target from the summer of 2025. The 22-year-old Cameroonian pure defensive midfielder is known for his physicality, strength, and ball-winning prowess. However, a January move is considered unlikely as United still lack a permanent head coach.

The Financial Equation and the Pressure to Replace
Casemiro’s departure (and his £350,000-a-week wages) will provide United significant payroll relief, but they will need to spend a substantial transfer fee to secure a worthy successor. Qualifying for the Champions League (United are currently just one point behind 4th-placed Liverpool) will be a key factor, both in increasing the club’s appeal and in providing the necessary budget for their transfer plans.
The pressure to replace him is considerable. Although he couldn’t guide United back to a title challenge, Casemiro brought invaluable experience and winning mentality, helping the club lift the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He bid an emotional farewell, stating: “I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life… My heart will forever be Red.”
The Bigger Picture: A Potential Double Midfield Rebuild
United’s need to rebuild their midfield may be even more urgent, as captain Bruno Fernandes continues to be linked with a potential move to the Saudi Pro League. It is increasingly likely that United will need to acquire two new midfielders in the summer 2026 transfer window, making this a critical task for any incoming permanent manager.
