Manchester United edged a breathless 3–2 win over Fulham under Michael Carrick, but despite the goals and late drama, VAR once again stole the spotlight.

United took control early when Casemiro powered home a header from a free-kick—awarded only after an initial penalty decision was overturned by VAR. Matheus Cunha then doubled the advantage, before substitute Benjamin Šeško sealed the win deep into stoppage time. Fulham had staged a late fightback through a Raúl Jiménez penalty and a stunning Kevin screamer, turning the closing stages into chaos.

Yet the defining moment arrived around the 65th minute.

Fulham thought they had pulled the game back to 2–1 when Jorge Cuenca smashed in from close range after a frantic set-piece scramble and multiple deflections. Cries of “Just look at the footage!” rang out as celebrations were cut short by a prolonged VAR review. After several tense minutes, the goal was ruled out for offside—Samuel Chukwueze judged to be marginally ahead of the line in the build-up, by mere inches according to semi-automated offside lines.

United fans breathed a sigh of relief as the decision stood, but outrage erupted from Fulham’s camp and neutral observers. Marco Silva did not hold back post-match, branding it a “horrendous, terrible decision.” The lengthy delay drained Fulham’s momentum, transforming what could have been a one-goal game into sustained United pressure and altering the match’s rhythm entirely.

In a rare and swift response, PGMOL later admitted the decision was incorrect. Their explanation acknowledged that Chukwueze did not have a “clear and obvious” impact on play under the current laws—or that the margin was simply too fine to justify VAR intervention. The incident failed to meet the threshold required to overturn the on-field decision.

Officials were heavily criticized for inconsistent application of semi-automated offside, questionable positioning by the assistant referee, and subjective judgment that swung the balance of the match. By maintaining United’s two-goal cushion for longer than it arguably should have lasted, the call played a major role in shaping the nervy finale.

The controversy reignited a familiar debate: why do marginal offside decisions stand in some matches but get ruled out in others? Consistency remains VAR’s biggest flaw, especially in high-profile games. Fulham fans pointed to a growing list of grievances, while United’s involvement once again intensified scrutiny.

Unlike previous incidents, no VAR audio has been released for this call, but PGMOL’s statement only added fuel to the fire. Silva and Fulham supporters demanded accountability, with renewed calls for clearer offside guidelines, faster reviews, and reforms to restore the “benefit of the doubt” to attackers.

United ultimately walked away with three vital points and Carrick maintained a perfect start—but the aftermath was anything but celebratory. The football took a back seat, trust in officiating took another hit, and VAR once again dominated headlines for all the wrong reasons.

“How was that even offside?” became the lingering question. Until consistency improves, controversies like this will continue to overshadow the game itself—and football will keep paying the price.
