Enrique is currently in charge of Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.
Luis Enrique could face an awkward reunion with one player if he takes charge at Manchester United.
The Paris Saint-Germain boss has been linked as a potential replacement for Ruben Amorim after the Portuguese was sacked as head coach by United on Monday.
Darren Fletcher is taking temporary charge of the side, with United in talks with fellow former players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick over an interim role until the end of the season.

According to The Athletic, Ruud van Nistelrooy is another option to reprise the role he filled for four games after the sacking of Erik ten Hag in 2024.

Attention appears likely to turn towards a long-term successor to Amorim in the summer, with the Portuguese boss having notably struggled last term after replacing Ten Hag mid-season.
Oliver Glasner, Kieran McKenna and Andoni Iraola are among the managers to be hotly linked with the post.
Glasner would not require a significant compensation fee to be paid as he is out of contract at Crystal Palace in June - a situation which may appeal to United's hierarchy.
The 20-time English champions shelled out a reported figure of around £10 million to Ten Hag and his staff after they gave the Dutchman a new contract before sacking him three months later.
While The Athletic claim that United will be required to pay compensation to Amorim in full as per his contract terms.
But if minority co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe decides to pursue a manager who is currently in work, one potential option would be Enrique.

The Spaniard told FourFourTwo in 2013 that he wants to manage in England during his career, and has previously been linked with Chelsea and Liverpool.
Whether he would leave Champions League holders PSG to join a team in United's position, regardless of club stature, is another matter, however.
United dealt directly with PSG in August 2024 in signing midfielder Manuel Ugarte for an initial fee of around £42.7 million.
Enrique sanctioned the move, telling reporters during the window that he was going to 'let go of those we no longer count on'.
The Uruguayan joined PSG from Sporting in the summer of 2023, but spent just a sole season in France, making 25 Ligue 1 appearances.

However, it was clear that Enrique did not see him as a long-term part of his plans, with Ugarte linked with a transfer away for most of the summer before he joined United.
Should Enrique make the unlikely move to Old Trafford, he would no doubt have to have an awkward conversation with the 24-year-old midfielder.
A decision over his future may be made imminently, however, with Dutch outlet VI reporting that Ajax want to sign him on loan in January and the player himself is 'not averse' to the move.

For young and aspiring athletes in London, the idea of breaking into elite sport feels like a locked system. Academy trials, limited opportunities and ultimately, the result will lie out of their hands.
Under Armour’s UA Next programme is a long-running talent pathway aiming to not only ease those barriers, but to shatter them.
UA Next, which is now in its tenth season and has tested over 12,500 athletes in London, was created to elevate the next generation of athletes through a level playing field for everyone involved.
By putting a range of 16 to 20-year-olds through vigorous free testing at the UA Next Academy in Battersea, individuals get the chance to showcase their talents.
After being tested on six core athletic measures – which consist of speed, strength, agility, power, endurance and athletic intelligence - top performers progress to the UA Next Camp.
Successful candidates will then face further tests, focusing on the mental aspects required in elite sports, as well as physical skills.
The challenges are designed to push athletes out of their comfort zone within different sporting environments and locations across the capital, replicating the unpredictability of elite sport.
The pathway to the top is not always linear and the UA Next programme is the perfect preparation to discover who is capable of excelling at the highest level.
From there, numbers get even tighter. Over 1500 athletes were tested in the latest season, with only 12 of them invited to the next camp and four of them winning the ultimate prize – a 12-month Under Armour sponsorship contract.
The involvement of a high-profile figure such as Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta – who reviewed performances and selected contract winners - raises the competitive credibility even further.
The presence of these elite-level stars highlights the importance of UA Next and what it signifies. The route to the top is changing and this programme, which continues to evolve by the day, offers a genuine and respected pathway outside traditional academy systems.
The new season of Under Armour’s UA Next programme will be rolling out on Instagram and TikTok throughout December. Think you have got what it takes? Book a test and prove it.

216 Bundesliga players anonymously vote for best manager in Europe as surprise name beats Luis Enrique
Paris Saint Germain boss Luis Enrique only got 16.7% of the votes.
A total of 216 players from the German first division, the Bundesliga, were asked to pick out the best manager in Europe.
German news outlet KICKER holds an annual survey which allows a group of Bundesliga players to share their opinions on several major talking points.
For example, Bayern Munich star Joao Palhinha was voted as the biggest disappointment in the Bundesliga, with Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz selected as the most impressive outfield player.
Overall, Lamine Yamal was voted as the best attacking player in Europe.
Away from players, the 216 players involved in the survey also voted for the best manager in Europe.
The likes of Luis Enrique, Xabi Alonso, Pep Guardiola, Arne Slot, Mikel Arteta, Carlo Ancelotti and Simone Inzaghi all received votes, but the winner was Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, who got 31.9%.
Despite winning the Champions League with Paris Saint Germain, Enrique came second with 16.7%.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen's Alonso (11.6%), Manchester City boss Guardiola (9.3%) and Liverpool head coach Slot (8.8%) rounded off the top five.
Flick enjoyed a stellar season in charge of Barcelona, having won the treble after lifting the Supercopa de Espana, Copa del Rey and the La Liga title.
Reacting to Enrique winning the Champions League, Guardiola said: "Those of us who are his (Enrique’s) friends are very happy, because he deserves it and he’s fantastic.
“When we played in the Champions League and lost 4-2, it gave me a feeling of power in every aspect. They (PSG) eliminated Liverpool and Arsenal, both of whom I know. They performed very well in the final. We are very happy for him (Enrique) and his family.”
Best managers in the world, as voted by 216 Bundesliga players
The City boss then also spoke about his former side Barcelona, he added: "It’s been an extraordinary year, with almost perfect results. Effective, with three goals per game on average, they’ve done very well, and we hope it continues for many years.
"He (Yamal) is in the best place in the world to grow. (Hansi) Flick has given Barcelona the nuances and we’ll see in 15 years. Everything points to a very good career given the amount of talent he has.
"Let’s let him (Yamal) have his career; in 10 or 15 years we’ll see if he can be compared to the greatest (Lionel Messi)."

Luis Enrique Has Made Feelings Clear On Liverpool After Being Named 'No.1 Target'
Enrique is being linked with the Liverpool role if Arne Slot is sacked.
Luis Enrique has made his feelings clear on Liverpool amid reports that he has been named as the number one target to become their new manager if Arne Slot is sacked.
Liverpool have now lost nine of their last 12 matches in all competitions after Tuesday's 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV.
They have fallen out of the top half of the Premier League, and are now behind Merseyside rivals Everton after the Toffees won 1-0 at Manchester United on Monday.
The next eight days could prove pivotal for Slot, as Liverpool have away matches at struggling West Ham and Leeds, and host Sunderland at Anfield on December 2.

Reds legend Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Dutchman has those three games to 'save his job', writing in The Telegraph that anything less than seven points would make his position 'untenable'.
Liverpool traditionally do not sack managers mid-season, with Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers being the two exceptions in the last century.
Should Slot join that short list, The Sun claim that the Reds would initially approach Jurgen Klopp over taking over on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Their long-term target, it is reported, is PSG boss Enrique, who guided the French giants to their maiden Champions League title last season.

The Spaniard has repeatedly stated that he one day hopes to manage in English football, in as early as 2013: "I'd like to manage in England at some point. My wife wouldn't like the weather - she's from Barcelona and likes the sun.
"It would depend on the team and the football they played."
In the same interview, Enrique revealed that he had studied how Liverpool played under Brendan Rodgers during his first season in charge: "I like the way Brendan Rodgers interprets the game, how he gets the team playing together, though I know it has been difficult for him in his first year at Liverpool."
But perhaps more pertinent to his current situation are comments made in March 2025 regarding Liverpool.
PSG took on the Reds in the last 16 of last season's Champions League, defeating them on penalties after two legs.
They won 2-1 at Anfield to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate, with Enrique stating ahead of the match: "Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe in recent years.
"We're going to face the team that has played the best so far in the Champions League this season. They won the Champions League recently.
"After the Jurgen Klopp era, it could have been difficult for Arne Slot to do better, but he has managed to create a perfect team that knows how to press, defend and attack.
"They know how to build a calculated attack as well as counter-attacks. They're a very complete team."

Real Madrid issued a message to Luis Enrique and Paris Saint-Germain following their Champions League triumph.
Real Madrid issued a classy message to Paris Saint-Germain and Luis Enrique following their Champions League triumph.
PSG thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 on Saturday to win their first Champions League title.
Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring and refused to celebrate following his spell with Inter. Desire Doue doubled his side's lead before the break, with PSG running riot in the second-half.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Doue and Senny Mayulu added a third, fourth and fifth in a convincing win in Munich.
After the game, PSG players and staff celebrated on the pitch.
Supporters who travelled to the Allianz Arena then unveiled a tifo depicting Enrique and his late daughter, Xana, who died of osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
Real, who were the defending champions, referenced Enrique's late daughter and congratulated his team on their success in a classy social media post.

On X, the club wrote: "Congratulations to @PSG_inside and their fans for their well-deserved Champions League 2024-2025 triumph. And our most special congratulations to our beloved Luis Enrique, with a heartfelt and affectionate memory for his daughter Xana."
Speaking after his side's victory, Enrique shared his thoughts on the emotional tifo: "It was very emotional with the banner from the fans for my family. But I always think about my daughter."
On the result, he added: "Since day one, I said I wanted to win important trophies. Paris had never won the Champions League.
"We did it for the first time. It’s a great feeling to make many people happy.
"We had a great start to the game, dominating from the beginning. But I wanted them to keep pushing, scoring, to ensure we won the game."
PSG end the season having won an impressive quadruple.
They won the Ligue 1 title, two domestic cups and, of course, the Champions League.
