Michael Carrick to Oversee Manchester United Until Season’s End as Transfer Plans Emerge

Michael Carrick is set to take charge of Manchester United as interim head coach until the end of the season following the dismissal of Rúben Amorim. Reports have now begun to shed light on Carrick’s approach to the January transfer window as the club navigates a period of transition.
Amorim’s departure comes after a 14-month spell in charge, during which results and performances failed to meet expectations. In the immediate aftermath, Darren Fletcher oversaw a 2–2 Premier League draw against Burnley before United were eliminated from the FA Cup by Brighton & Hove Albion.
Carrick will now guide the team while the club continues its search for a permanent head coach.
January Transfer Strategy Under Carrick

As the January transfer window opens, there has been speculation about potential new arrivals at Old Trafford. However, reports indicate that Carrick is unlikely to deviate from Manchester United’s established long-term recruitment strategy.
Carrick previously stepped into a caretaker role for three matches following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and a similar approach is expected this time. The club is understood to be focused on securing long-term targets only if they become available or if there is a risk of losing them to rival clubs.
This strategy means there are no immediate plans to sign players solely to suit the preferences of an incoming permanent manager.
Midfield Targets Remain the Priority
Among the players reportedly aligned with United’s long-term planning are Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba. Under Carrick’s interim leadership, this recruitment philosophy is expected to remain unchanged.
Looking beyond the current window, Manchester United are believed to be targeting two additional midfield reinforcements across upcoming transfer periods. Elliot Anderson has been identified as a key priority as the club looks to strengthen its options in the middle of the pitch.
Academy Winger Departs Carrington
Alongside developments at first-team level, there has also been movement within the club’s academy setup. Young winger Sam Mather has confirmed his departure from Manchester United after 14 years in the club’s youth system.
The Salford-born wide player signed his first professional contract in 2021 and was part of the side that lifted the FA Youth Cup. He also travelled with the first team on their pre-season tour of the United States in 2024.
After spending much of last season on loan at Tranmere Rovers, Mather has now completed a move to Turkish Super Lig side Kayserispor.
In a farewell message, Mather expressed his gratitude to the club’s staff and teammates, describing his time at Manchester United as a formative chapter in both his personal and professional development, while looking ahead with optimism to the next stage of his career.
