Reports from Spain claim United are closely monitoring the 22-year-old La Masia graduate amid growing uncertainty over his role at Barcelona

Manchester United’s search for midfield reinforcements has taken a fresh twist, with reports from Spain claiming the Premier League giants have made an enquiry for Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado.

The 22-year-old has quietly built an impressive profile at the Camp Nou, but a lack of regular starts under coach Hansi Flick has opened the door to growing interest from across Europe. United are now said to be monitoring the situation closely as they plan ahead for both the remainder of the season and the long-term rebuild of their squad.

    United step up midfield monitoring

According to Barcelona-based outlet Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United have made an initial approach to understand Casado’s availability and the conditions under which Barcelona might consider a deal. While no formal bid has been submitted, the enquiry shows United’s ongoing focus on strengthening the midfield area that has been inconsistent in recent seasons.

Casado is viewed as a modern central midfielder: energetic, aggressive in the tackle, and comfortable receiving the ball under pressure. These qualities have made him stand out at youth and senior level, and explain why United scouts have “closely monitored” his progress over a sustained period.

United’s interest comes at a time when the club are carefully balancing financial limits with the need to refresh the squad. Younger players with top-level experience, like Casado, fit neatly into that strategy.

From La Masia to La Liga winner

    Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado.

Casado is a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy and made his senior breakthrough in 2022. Since then, he has gone on to make 60 appearances across all competitions, an impressive tally given the fierce competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield.

He was part of the squad that won last season’s La Liga title, featuring in 23 league matches as Barca lifted the trophy. While he was not always a guaranteed starter, his involvement proved the trust the manager placed in his ability to perform at the highest level.

In total, Casado has already collected four major trophies with the Catalan club, a remarkable achievement for a player still only 22. He has also earned two senior caps for Spain, underlining his growing reputation beyond club football.

    Reduced role under Hansi Flick

Despite that progress, Casado’s situation has shifted this season. Under Flick, he has started just ten league games, often finding himself rotated in and out of the side. While he continues to feature regularly, he is no longer seen as an automatic pick.

Reports suggest Casado has always dreamed of becoming a long-term Barcelona first-team star and was previously reluctant to consider leaving the club. However, with his minutes limited and competition increasing, the midfielder is now believed to be more open to a move if it offers consistent playing time.

That change in mindset has alerted several clubs, with Manchester United now joining a growing list of suitors.

Atletico Madrid and Premier League competition

Atletico Madrid are also keen on Casado, viewing him as a potential replacement for Conor Gallagher, who joined Tottenham earlier this January. Diego Simeone’s side explored a move last summer and continue to see Casado as an attractive option due to his tactical discipline and work rate.

However, there is reportedly no formal offer from Atletico yet. The club are also considering alternatives such as Wolves’ Joao Gomes and Atalanta’s Ederson, though both would likely cost more than Casado.

Wolves themselves are another possible destination. Molineux has been mentioned as a potential landing spot, with Casado appearing on the club’s shortlist of midfield targets. Chelsea have also been linked with him in the past, further highlighting the level of interest surrounding the player.

    Casado’s stance and Barcelona’s position

Casado is under contract at Barcelona until June 2028, which puts the club in a strong negotiating position. For much of the season, the midfielder has been keen to stay until at least the summer, with an initial preference for a move abroad if he were to leave Spain.

While Atletico Madrid are now seen as a “favourable” option, he is understood to be waiting to see how the final weeks of the January window unfold. A move to the Premier League, particularly to a club of United’s stature, could also prove appealing if a clear pathway to regular football is offered.

Hansi Flick, for his part, has made it clear publicly that he would prefer to keep Casado at the club. Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s recent defeat to Real Sociedad, the German coach stressed his desire for stability.

“My idea is for everyone to stay,” Flick said when asked about potential departures. “It’s football, but I don’t want to say anything more.”

A deal that makes sense for United?

For Manchester United, Casado represents a low-risk, high-upside option. He brings elite-level experience, a strong winning background, and the hunger of a player still trying to establish himself. At 22, he also fits the profile of a footballer who could develop into a long-term solution rather than a short-term fix.

Whether United push beyond an initial enquiry remains to be seen. Much will depend on Barcelona’s stance, Casado’s willingness to move mid-season, and the competition from other clubs.

What is clear, however, is that Marc Casado’s future is no longer straightforward. As the January window enters its decisive phase, Manchester United’s interest adds another intriguing layer to a transfer story that could yet gather pace.
