Mason Greenwood burst onto the scene at Manchester United at just 17, quickly exciting supporters and earning recognition as one of England’s most promising young prospects. Trusted by then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the versatile attacker lived up to expectations, scoring 35 goals in 129 appearances across all competitions and regularly displaying flashes of elite-level ability.

That upward trajectory came to an abrupt stop in January 2022 when Greenwood was arrested by Greater Manchester Police on serious allegations, including attempted rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior. Although the charges were later dropped after key witnesses withdrew and new evidence came to light, the controversy had already caused significant damage to his public image.

Following the incident, Manchester United chose not to reintegrate Greenwood into the first team amid widespread criticism and fan backlash. As a result, the forward was forced to restart his career outside England. He joined La Liga side Getafe on loan, where he made an immediate impact, scoring ten goals and registering six assists, performances that earned him the club’s Player of the Season award.

His resurgence in Spain attracted the interest of Olympique Marseille, who moved to sign him permanently. Now 24, Greenwood has rediscovered his sharpness in France, once again showcasing the talent that once captivated Premier League audiences. This season, he has already recorded 20 goals and six assists, drawing attention from top European clubs such as Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Liverpool.

Further intrigue surrounds the situation due to a reported buyback clause included when Manchester United sold Greenwood to Marseille. This provision would allow United to re-sign him at a significantly reduced price compared to his current valuation, which some reports estimate could be as high as €100 million if Marseille were to sell him. Football Insider claims that discussions are ongoing within United’s leadership about whether to trigger the clause and bring Greenwood back to Old Trafford.

The possibility of a return raises questions about fan reaction and the club’s intentions. While Greenwood’s quality could strengthen the squad, some believe the move may be driven by financial considerations, enabling United to repurchase him at a lower fee and potentially sell him later for profit. Either way, Greenwood’s journey—from controversy to redemption on the European stage—remains a compelling storyline that continues to draw widespread attention.
