Few players have experienced as many highs and lows at Old Trafford as Maguire, who joined the Red Devils in 2019 for £80 million from Leicester City. He became the most expensive defender in history at the time and was soon made captain by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, a poor run of form later saw Erik ten Hag strip him of the captaincy and hand it to Bruno Fernandes.
Maguire could leave MU this month.
What once looked like the end of the road, Maguire revived his career at Manchester United and won back the trust of many fans. Last season, he made 40 appearances and scored a decisive goal in a memorable Europa League quarter-final against Lyon.
However, at 32 years old, Maguire is struggling to secure regular playing time this season. According to Italian media, this lack of minutes on the pitch is the main reason he is willing to leave. Additionally, his contract expires in the summer, making this the final chance for Manchester United to earn a transfer fee.
Inter Milan, Napoli, and Fiorentina are among the clubs considering making offers. If he moves to Napoli, Maguire could reunite with teammate Rasmus Højlund, who is currently on loan there, and work under former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.
Whether Maguire stays or departs may depend on the opinion of interim manager Michael Carrick. The former England midfielder, who has previously had two interim stints in charge, left a positive impression on Maguire during their time working together.
In 2021, Maguire said: “Michael is a very likable man, and everyone respected him and was sorry to see him go.” Carrick has in return praised Maguire as a “true leader and talisman.”
