Mikel Arteta has sent shockwaves through the Premier League with a worrying update on Piero Hincapié’s fitness just days before Arsenal face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge.

It wasn’t all good news for Mikel Arteta this weekend.
The summer signing was substituted in the first half of last Thursday’s 0-0 draw against Liverpool after suffering a muscular injury, and the early signs are not encouraging. Hincapié missed Arsenal’s 4-1 FA Cup third-round win at Portsmouth on Sunday, and Arteta’s latest comments have only heightened fears that the Ecuadorian could be sidelined for Wednesday’s crucial cup tie.

Speaking after the victory at Fratton Park, Arteta delivered a typically cautious assessment: “Obviously he had to come off, which is never a good sign, but hopefully it’s not too much. Probably tomorrow we’ll know a little bit more where he’s at.”
With Riccardo Calafiori also doubtful and teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly enduring a difficult afternoon against Championship side Portsmouth—struggling in duels and offering little going forward—Arsenal’s defensive options are looking alarmingly thin heading into the midweek showdown.
Arteta’s injury list currently includes Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera, though there is finally some positive news on the pair. “They are out again,” the manager confirmed before the Portsmouth trip, but added: “Pretty soon they have to go to the last stage of rehab. If everything goes well, hopefully very soon they will be available.”
Piero Hincapié
Whether “very soon” includes the Chelsea clash remains unclear, but Arsenal supporters will be desperate for any reinforcements.
Calafiori, in particular, has been sorely missed. The £42m Italian full-back brought dynamism and attacking threat to the side in the first half of the season, registering more shots (22) than even summer marquee striker Viktor Gyökeres (20) across Arsenal’s opening 15 league games. His absence has removed a vital element of unpredictability from Arteta’s system.
Hincapié, while outstanding defensively, has shown less comfort in advanced areas—most notably when he stumbled over the ball to halt a promising counter-attack against Aston Villa last month.
Arsenal fans will be holding their breath for tomorrow’s update. A fully fit Hincapié would be a huge boost, but the return of Calafiori could prove even more transformative against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea. The Premier League is watching closely—this defensive crisis could define the Gunners’ cup ambitions.
