Newly appointed interim manager Michael Carrick is pushing Manchester United to sign midfielder Hayden Hackney for £30 million to upgrade the team’s ball-control capabilities in the midfield this January.
Manchester United is once again witnessing major changes on the touchline. This time, Michael Carrick has been chosen to take the “hot seat,” replacing Ruben Amorim as interim manager until the end of the season. Carrick’s mission is not only to stabilize the dressing room but also to replicate the positive impact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once achieved. However, regardless of how well Carrick performs, club legend Gary Neville has already issued a stern warning that the Red Devils’ board must not let emotions dictate their decision by handing out a long-term contract immediately.

Hackney is on Man Utd’s radar.
According to Neville, Man Utd previously fell into this trap with Solskjaer and must not repeat the mistake. He emphasized that even if Carrick leads the team back into the top 4 and secures a Champions League spot, the club must remain steadfast and wait for world-class strategists like Thomas Tuchel or Roberto De Zerbi in the summer.
Nevertheless, having a clear future does not stop Carrick from making squad calculations in January. His primary target is Hayden Hackney, his former pupil at Middlesbrough, who is currently valued at approximately £30 million.
Why is Carrick so keen on acquiring Hackney? The answer lies in the 23-year-old midfielder’s convincing technical statistics compared to the Red Devils’ current personnel, specifically Manuel Ugarte.
Carrick needs reinforcements to save Man Utd’s season.
With Man Utd’s midfield underperforming since the start of the season, Hackney has emerged as a comprehensive solution for ball control and transition. Based on statistics from the 25/26 season, Hackney completely outperforms Ugarte in ball progression. Specifically, Hackney averages 7.94 progressive passes per 90 minutes, while Ugarte’s figure stands at just 4.81.
This difference suggests that Hackney would bring a “breath of fresh air” to the way the team operates at Old Trafford. Not only is he strong in distribution, but he also possesses high energy, with a ball recovery rate of 5.79 times per match, slightly higher than Ugarte’s 5.43.
While Ugarte remains a more effective “destroyer” with 2.84 successful tackles compared to Hackney’s 1.31, Carrick clearly prioritizes a modern-minded midfielder who knows how to escape pressing and move the ball forward, rather than focusing purely on defense.
The £30 million price tag is considered reasonable for a young talent who has established his status at Middlesbrough and was once praised by former coach Rob Edwards as “outstanding.” With backing from Carrick—the person who understands his potential best—this deal is expected to help Man Utd salvage the remainder of the season in the grueling Premier League.
