Manchester United are going through a period of turbulent transition on the coaching bench after the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
Despite this upheaval, it doesn’t mean that transfer activity at Old Trafford will completely freeze in the January window. A serious plan to strengthen the midfield is being considered, with the aim of finding a name that is of higher quality than Manuel Ugarte.
And the name most talked about recently is Ruben Neves — the former Wolves captain currently playing in Saudi Arabia.
Nevespossesses impressive ball distribution skills.
An Opportunity to Sign Ruben Neves on the Cheap
Ruben Neves is valued at around £18 million — a very “soft” price considering his class and extensive Premier League experience. This is seen as a perfect short-term solution to United’s midfield personnel problem.
TalkSPORT radio journalist Alex Crook recently stated on air that the move is not “dead”. He said: “There are still discussions about Ruben Neves possibly returning from Saudi Arabia on a short-term deal. I think he would be an upgrade over Manuel Ugarte.”
At 28 years old, Neves is at the peak of his career. His ability to control play, distribute the ball, and strike from distance are qualities United’s midfield currently lacks — especially when compared with Ugarte, who is more about strength but limited in ball progression.
A smart 18‑month deal with a reasonable fee is viewed as a clever move by INEOS’ leadership at the club right now.
Manuel Ugarte’s Uncertain Future
The potential arrival of Neves also casts serious doubt over Manuel Ugarte’s future at Old Trafford.
The Uruguay midfielder is said to be on the radar of Ajax Amsterdam for a loan deal, and Ugarte himself is reportedly interested in moving to the Netherlands to get more playing time.
Ugarte joined Manchester United with high expectations but has so far struggled to deliver consistent performances. Although he is strong in duels, he often has difficulty escaping high pressing and in ball progression — areas where Neves excels.
A Question for United’s Interim Manager
However, all final transfer decisions will depend heavily on the outlook of the incoming interim manager. If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer — rumored to possibly return to manage the Red Devils — takes charge, the situation could change. Solskjaer reportedly favors energetic, mobile midfielders like Ugarte, which could help the Uruguayan retain his place.
On the other hand, if the club’s leadership wants to adopt a greater focus on control in midfield immediately — preparing for a new era with a manager like Thomas Tuchel (linked as a top summer target) — bringing in an elite passer like Neves would be essential.
Looking Ahead to Summer Overhaul
Looking further ahead to the summer, Manchester United are certain to undergo a midfield overhaul, especially if Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Ugarte all enter the final year of their contracts or depart.
But right now, Ruben Neves is emerging as the most viable “rescue” option to salvage United’s season — a cheap but high‑quality deal. The question remains: will United dare to “go big” and upgrade their squad?
