Late last weekend, Michael Carrick enjoyed a dream start in his second spell as Manchester United’s interim head coach, replacing Ruben Amorim until the end of the season. An effective tactical setup helped the Red Devils defeat Manchester City 2–0 at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu.

That result not only highlighted Carrick’s coaching ability but also boosted hopes of competing for a Champions League spot for the historic English club.

Recognizing that the midfield still needs reinforcement, United’s leadership has turned their attention to Joao Gomes, the midfielder currently on the books of Wolves.

Joao Gomes is a “midfield warrior” that Man Utd covets.Joao Gomes is a “midfield warrior” that Man Utd covets.

According to reports, the Red Devils are very keen on the Brazilian after closely monitoring him since last summer. Scout reports describe Gomes as a “midfield warrior” whose playing style perfectly suits the physical nature of the Premier League.

However, this transfer won’t be straightforward. United will have to fight hard against other European clubs for his signature. Napoli are reportedly the most eager to secure Gomes, and there are even rumours that the Serie A side have a “gentleman’s agreement” with the player. At the same time, Atletico Madrid have also placed Gomes high on their transfer priority list, and Crystal Palace are monitoring the situation as well. Meanwhile, Liverpool have cooled their interest and withdrawn from the race.

The main challenge is the transfer fee. Wolves are said to value their star around £50 million.

Given Wolves’ ongoing relegation battle in the Premier League, a loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season is considered a viable option for all parties to reach an agreement this January window.

Joao Gomes recently celebrated his 100th Premier League appearance in Wolves’ 3–0 victory over West Ham on 3 January. Speaking to the media, the 24-year-old midfielder said:

“The Premier League is the greatest domestic league in the world. Everything here is amazing… I will give my all to help the club stay up.”

Although Gomes remains committed to Wolves, his deep affection for English football could be a major advantage that helps Manchester United beat Napoli or Atletico Madrid to his signature — either this month or in the upcoming summer transfer window.
