Manchester United’s search for Casemiro’s successor is now officially underway. The Red Devils confirmed the Brazilian enforcer’s departure at the end of the current campaign, with his contract expiring this summer. Replacing a five-time Champions League winner will be a major priority over the coming months.

Casemiro’s Man Utd adventure concludes at the end of the season.

Casemiro’s Man Utd adventure concludes at the end of the season.

United have long wanted a younger, more dynamic midfielder – the opposite of Casemiro in the twilight of his career – and strengthening the engine room remains the top target for the summer window, despite uncertainty over the next permanent manager.

Several midfielders have been repeatedly linked with Old Trafford over the past year and are now certain to attract even more attention, but plenty of other names will likely enter the conversation. Here are six realistic candidates to replace Casemiro at Manchester United.

Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion)

    Carlos Baleba

    Carlos Baleba

United’s admiration for Carlos Baleba has never been a secret. The club tried to sign the highly-rated Brighton midfielder last summer before being warned off, and Baleba’s head was clearly turned by the interest. His performances have dipped this season, but that doesn’t erase the reason United were so eager in the first place. The 22-year-old Cameroonian enjoyed an exceptional 2024-25 campaign, shining as a replacement for Moisés Caicedo after his 2023 move to Chelsea. His aggressive defensive style and boundless energy caught the eye. Baleba remains firmly linked with United, even if a January move looks unlikely. A price tag exceeding £100 million is a major hurdle, but saving Casemiro’s reported £350,000 weekly wages gives United more financial breathing room. In terms of style and profile, Baleba fits the mold of Casemiro’s successor perfectly.

    Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)

    Adam Wharton

    Adam Wharton

Adam Wharton’s meteoric rise has made him one of England’s brightest prospects. With Eberechi Eze, Marc Guéhi, Oliver Glasner, and potentially Jean-Philippe Mateta all linked with moves away, Wharton would be foolish not to consider his options amid the chaos at Selhurst Park. Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, and United have all been credited with interest. Wharton has flourished in the Premier League with his passing range, technical class, and positional intelligence. However, he is not a like-for-like Casemiro replacement. He thrives alongside a more defensive-minded partner but lacks the raw defensive steel to directly inherit Casemiro’s throne. Still, as a potential generational talent, Wharton should not be dismissed.

    Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest)

    Elliot Anderson

    Elliot Anderson

Elliot Anderson’s stock has skyrocketed since his PSR-forced move from Newcastle to Nottingham Forest. The combative, all-action midfielder has exploded into life, earning England call-ups under Thomas Tuchel. He could well start alongside Declan Rice in England’s double pivot at the 2026 World Cup. At 23, Anderson offers relentless energy, defensive awareness, athleticism, and stellar distribution – a complete package. A transfer fee could again exceed £100 million, but United – who have shown prior interest – would be acquiring one of the country’s most exciting young midfield talents. While not a pure enforcer like Casemiro, his versatility makes him a serious contender.

    Rúben Neves (Al Hilal)

    Rúben Neves

    Rúben Neves

Links between United and Rúben Neves date back to his emergence at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Though he moved to Al Hilal in 2023, rumors of a Premier League return persist, especially with his contract expiring next summer. A reported £20 million fee in January would be an attractive, affordable option – providing cover, proven Premier League experience, and a midfielder still in his prime at 28. While his time in Saudi Arabia means he hasn’t faced Europe’s elite recently, Neves offers technical quality and goalscoring threat. He may not be a direct like-for-like replacement, but he remains a high-quality short-term solution.

    Éderson (Atalanta)

    Éderson

    Éderson

Éderson was once tipped for a big-money move after an exceptional 2023-24 campaign that helped Atalanta win the Europa League. Though no blockbuster transfer materialized, the Brazilian continues to impress in Serie A. A press-resistant, high-energy midfielder with strong defensive instincts, Éderson has thrived even after Gian Piero Gasperini’s departure. With just 18 months left on his contract, United could secure him at a relatively modest fee. He represents an astute, under-the-radar option to replace Casemiro’s defensive output while adding modern qualities.

    Angelo Stiller (VfB Stuttgart)

    Angelo Stiller

    Angelo Stiller

Angelo Stiller has been regularly linked with the Premier League, with United among the most frequent suitors. The 24-year-old has been instrumental in Stuttgart’s resurgence – including a return to the Champions League and DFB Pokal glory. Stiller is not a traditional defensive midfielder; he can operate further forward and regularly contributes assists (11 across all competitions last season). He ranks highly for progressive passes and deliveries into the final third in the Bundesliga. Defensively solid but not an orthodox enforcer, Stiller still offers a balanced profile that aligns with United’s modern ambitions. Casemiro also contributed goals and attacking threat (33 goals + assists since joining), so Stiller’s skill set could complement the role.

Manchester United face a pivotal decision in replacing Casemiro: opt for youth and upside (Baleba, Wharton, Anderson, Stiller), a cost-effective experienced option (Neves), or an undervalued gem (Éderson). With the managerial situation still unclear, strengthening midfield remains the top priority for the summer of 2026. The engine room rebuild will shape United’s future direction.

Who should United target to replace Casemiro?
