OFFICIAL: Manchester United Win Transfer Race for Europe’s £80m Midfield Sensation
Manchester United have reportedly beaten Liverpool and Manchester City in the race to secure one of Europe’s most highly rated midfielders, with a deal edging closer to completion as Ruben Amorim prepares to make his first January signing.
The Red Devils have been in contact with Brighton & Hove Albion to explore the possibility of signing Carlos Baleba during the January transfer window. United showed strong interest in the Cameroonian midfielder last summer, but Brighton made it clear they would only consider offers of a staggering figure — potentially exceeding £100m.

Although Baleba has not hit his very best form this season, Sky Sports News reports that Manchester United have not cooled their interest. On the contrary, the club still views the 21-year-old as a priority midfield target and has already “explored the conditions” required to complete a deal.
Brighton are expected to resist any January sale, preferring to keep Baleba until at least the end of the 2025–26 season. However, United are closely monitoring the situation and could move quickly before the window closes should Brighton soften their stance.
United’s midfield is set for major changes in the near future. Casemiro is likely to depart on a free transfer, while Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo have all been linked with possible exits. While not all four are expected to leave this year, at least two midfield departures are anticipated.
Baleba, currently representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations, has made 19 appearances for Brighton this season and remains one of the most sought-after young midfielders in Europe.
Manchester United are also tracking Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton ahead of the summer window. Securing Baleba alongside one of those targets would completely reshape United’s midfield, though the financial challenge remains significant.
Baleba alone could command a fee in excess of £90m, with Anderson and Wharton valued at similar levels — underlining just how ambitious United’s rebuild under Amorim could become.
